چکیده

The propagation of sound waves at infrasonic frequencies (oscillation periods 1.0 1000 seconds) in the atmosphere is being studied by a network of seven stations separated geographically by distances of the order of thousands of kilometers. One of the typical stations, in Washington, D. C., has an array of five microphones separated by distances of about 7 kilometers. Each microphone is at ground level and is connected to the central station by means of a leased telephone line. In effect the array is "steered" to look for sound waves in a programmed sequence of search directions. The station measures the following characteristics of infrasonic waves passing through Washington: (1) the amplitude and waveform of the incident sound pressure, (2) the direction of propagation of the wave, (3) the horizontal phase velocity, and (4) the distribution of sound wave energy at various frequencies of oscillation. Some infrasonic sources which have been identified and studied include the aurora borealis, tornadoes, volcanos, gravity waves on the oceans, earthquakes, and atmospheric instability waves caused by winds at the tropopause. Waves of unknown origin seem to radiate from several geographical locations, including one in the Argentine. 633 https://ntrs.nasa.gov/search.jsp?R=19720017735 2018-04-02T12:11:32+00:00Z

DYNAMICAL SIMULATION OF UNDERWATER SOUND PROPAGATION IN THE HORMOZ STRAIT

Providing an illustration of sound propagation in the Hormoz Strait ,this paper is about acoustic wave propagation in shallow water for a harmonic point source with low frequency, less than 1000 and solution of a homogenous Helmholtz equation using parabolic equation. C++ programming is used to solve Helmholtz equation [9] and MATLAB software is used to illustrate figures and animate them [6], ...

The Effect of Water Surface and Sea Bottom on Sound Propagation in Persian Gulf

Whether exploratory or commercially, acoustic fishery benefits are important in finding a school of fish and other aquatics, but using this procedure and state accurate detailed information for the whole specifications of organisms require sufficient information of sound speed changes, course of ray propagation and their rate of  absorption and attenuation . This research has considered the qua...

Evaluating a linearized Euler equations model for strong turbulence effects on sound propagation.

Sound propagation outdoors is strongly affected by atmospheric turbulence. Under strongly perturbed conditions or long propagation paths, the sound fluctuations reach their asymptotic behavior, e.g., the intensity variance progressively saturates. The present study evaluates the ability of a numerical propagation model based on the finite-difference time-domain solving of the linearized Euler e...

Sound Wave Propagation in Viscous Liquid-Filled Non-Rigid Carbon Nanotube with Finite Length

In this paper, numerical results obtained and explained from an exact formula in relation to sound pressure load due to the presence of liquid inside the finite-length non-rigid carbon nanotubes (CNTs), which is coupled with the dynamic equations of motion for the CNT. To demonstrate the accuracy of this work, the obtained formula has been compared to what has been used by other research...

Atmospheric Sound Propagation Considerations for the Birdstrike Project

Sound propagates as a longitudinal wave disturbance in compressible media such as air. If the properties of the medium vary with spatial position or if the medium itself is in motion, the sound propagation will be affected. Therefore, for the Birdstrike project it is important to understand the potential effects of atmospheric temperature, wind, relative humidity, and other effects that will be...

Atmospheric acoustics of Titan, Mars, Venus, and Earth

Planetary atmospheres are complex dynamical systems whose structure, composition, and dynamics intimately affect the propagation of sound. Thus, acoustic waves, being coupled directly to the medium, can effectively probe planetary environments. Here we show how the acoustic absorption and speed of sound in the atmospheres of Venus, Mars, Titan, and Earth (as predicted by a recent molecular acou...
